Hi there, and a very warm welcome to ComberOnline.org. The Only Community website for Comber County Down that is run BY Comber people, FOR Comber people!
Comber (in Irish: An Comar, meaning the confluence) is a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland, 5 miles south of Newtownards, located at the northern end of Strangford Lough. Its population was 8,933 in the 2001 Census and continues to grow.
Our town is just 9 miles ESE of Belfast, in the heart of potato-growing country, and is home of the famous "Comber Potato" The town is also known for Comber Whiskey (which was last distilled in 1953) , The "TT" Races, Andrews Mills and is most famous for being the birthplace of Thomas Andrews, the RMS Titanic's shipbuilder, who died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912
Recently the town has become well known for its new cycling path known locally as the "Comber Greenway". The Greenway is a new 7 mile traffic free section of the National Cycle Network ( Route 99) developed by Sustrans along the old Belfast to Comber railway line. The path was completed in November 2008 and provides a tranquil green corridor all the way from Comber to the heart of East Belfast with views along the route of Stormont and Scrabo Tower. The walking and cycling route provides local people with a traffic free environment for leisure walking and cycling and offers commuting cyclists a direct and traffic-free route from Comber to Belfast city centre.
