Comber Dog Collared

Three dogs have been collared in the first week of the Dangerous Dogs amnesty in Ards.

The animals, all confirmed as Pit Bulls, have been collected by Ards Borough Council as part of the month long amnesty taking place this March which ensures that anyone who owns, or suspects they own, a dangerous dog, can hand it over to the Council at no cost and without fear of prosecution.

“In all three cases, one in the Comber area and the other two in Newtownards, we have been contacted by the dogs’ owners who have been concerned that their pets were designated as dangerous dogs,” said Richard Brittain, Borough Inspector with the Council. “Naturally we are pleased with this initial response which takes potentially dangerous animals out of circulation and would encourage anyone else who suspects that they are in a similar position to get in touch with us”.

Ards is running the amnesty along with neighbouring local authorities, Castlereagh, Lisburn, North Down and Down. There are four dogs designated as dangerous under the legislation (Pitt Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Braziliero), with the most common in the UK being the Pit Bull type terrier.

If you believe you own a designated dangerous dog and would like to surrender it, contact the Borough Inspector’s Office at Ards Borough Council, Tel: 028 9182 4005.
