The final countdown to bin changes is on, with Ards switching to a fortnightly collection of grey bins from next week (Monday 2nd June).
The switch in service means that across the Ards grey bins will be collected one week and blue bins will be collected the next. The move is a bid to reduce the amount of waste which needlessly goes to landfill and to boost the Ards area’s recycling rate from 25% to 40%, avoiding potentially huge fines from Europe.
Since the decision to go fortnightly was announced and an information campaign launched at the end of March, more than 2,000 residents have requested blue recycling bins to be ready for the new collection service which begins on Monday 2nd June.
“The response from local people has been very encouraging and we now estimate that we have 27,000 households participating in kerbside recycling, each of them making an invaluable contribution to our drive to meet the 40% target,” said Councillor Jonathan Bell, Chairman of the Council’s Council Services Committee. “Our priority has been to ensure that we get the additional blue bins out on the ground for the start of the new collections, a task made difficult by a delay in receiving new bins from the manufacturer. At this stage, however, we anticipate that everyone who has requested a blue bin will have it for Monday 2nd June”.
New calendars for the collection of grey and blue bins have already been distributed to homes across the Ards, with new timetables for the collection of brown bins being issued this week (27th – 31st May).
