The search starts here for the NI Young Musician of the Year 2009.
Launching the event, organiser Duggie Anderson said: “As well as providing a platform for young musicians to gain valuable competition experience this well-established event, now in its 17th year, is an opportunity for the Rotary Club of Comber to raise funds for two local charities, the NI Cancer Fund for Children and the NI Music Therapy Trust.”
We are particularly pleased that one of our most faithful supporters, PricewaterhouseCoopers, has decided to take on full sponsorship of the event. Announcing their sponsorship, PwC managing partner, Hugh Crossey said: “A competition of this calibre that encourages a love of music amongst young people in Northern Ireland plays a vital part in stimulating community cohesion and we are delighted to increase our support for this long-established and hugely prestigious event.”
Adjudicating last year’s final, BBC music producer Melvyn Rickarby remarked: “The 2008 event displayed a truly impressive range of musical talent. All ambitious young players and singers need exactly this sort of competitive experience to sharpen their performance skills. Shortly after her win in Comber, pianist Fionnuala Ward from Magherafelt was thrilled to be invited to perform at a royal gathering in Hillsborough Castle.”
The winner’s prize will be £250 in Matchetts vouchers and an engraved Tyrone Crystal trophy. All finalists will receive certificates.
The competition is open to all solo instrumentalists aged 12 to 16 inclusive and singers aged 12 to 18 inclusive. Entrants will appear in three heats in Comber on March 2, 3 and 4. The adjudicator will select the best performers to appear in the Final on Saturday March 7.
Entry forms and rules are being sent to second-level schools and colleges throughout the Province. They can also be downloaded from www.comberrotary.org or by emailing rdanderson1@btinternet.com
